Music Research Institute

The Music Research Institute was established in 2009 within the School of Music at the University of Kansas. The Institute was founded to cultivate and strengthen the already thriving component of research and creative activity in the School of Music. The purpose of the Institute is to create effective environments for the pursuit of music scholarship in all modes of inquiry. MRI exists to foster creative activity and research and provides a support system that attempts to blend the best human and musical characteristics of the music researcher, practitioner, and teacher with the best support available. The following MRI activities are supported by the School of Music at The University of Kansas: graduate education, faculty and student research, post-doctoral study, and occasional workshops, symposia, and visiting scholars.

The aims of the Institute are to:

  • Support and develop new knowledge about music, music education, music therapy, and diversely related areas through scholarly inquiry,

  • Aid school members in the pursuit of support for their areas of creative interests,

  • Provide space and facilities to develop applications of research to music performance, teaching, therapy, and analysis,

  • Support and foster research collaborations among faculty and students,

  • Encourage the development of new technology as well as to utilize existing technology and techniques in teaching and research,

  • Establish and maintain relations with similar research and teaching centers at other academic institutions.
