Formerly a member of the teaching staff at Keele and Exeter universities, UK, and University College Dublin, Alan has also held research posts at Clare College, University of Cambridge, and Yale University (where he worked with Allen Forte). From 2008–09 he was Visiting Slee Professor of Music Theory at SUNY Buffalo, and in 2016 was elected to a Visiting Research Fellowship at Clare Hall, University of Cambridge. A member of the Advisory Board of the journal Music Analysis, he served as Editor from 2005–11, and latterly as Associate Editor (2012–17).  The author of numerous articles on aspects of musical and critical theory, his most recent published work includes a contribution to the encyclopaedia Lexicon Musiktheorie/Musikästhetik edited by Ullrich Scheideler and Felix Wörner.
