Dr. Debra (Gordon) Hedden, Associate Professor of Music Education and Music Therapy at the University of Kansas, is a general music specialist and is a past chair of MENC’s Chair of the Society for General Music.
In public school she has taught band, choir, and general music; in higher education she has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in music education and has founded and directed the Northern Iowa Children’s Choir at UNI. While at KU since 2003, she has initiated graduate music education distance delivery and has founded and directed the KU Youth Chorus at The University of Kansas.

• August 22 (classes begin), 29
• September 12, 19, 26
• October 3, 17, 24, 31
• November 7, 14, 21, 28

The course will be offered at KU as both an on-campus class in MUR 575 and an off-campus course with sites to be determined by students' needs. Some community colleges and high schools have Polycom transmission capabilities and could be used for class locations; or the student can purchase software and use the internet to attend class. Both venues offer live, participatory class sessions that can conceivably occur anywhere in the world.
Course participants will have continuous opportunities to enhance their professional networking as well as learn from each other.
Practicing music educators and current graduate students in any music education discipline are potential participants for the course.
While this is an innovative approach to teaching and learning, the class will function as a typical class in virtually every way.
All students will learn to operate the technology at the site and will be assigned presentations and/or papers that will be delivered to the class via the technology.
The instructor will provide technical assistance in learning the system. All participants will contribute in terms of teaching and learning.Credit
The course is offered for 3 graduate hours of credit, 2 hours for class and 1 hour for assigned projects, papers, and/or presentations. The third hour will be devoted to out-of-class preparation and research.
This is a live interactive class offered at multiple sites simultaneously via the Kan-Ed distance system and the internet.
Students wishing to enroll at a distance site should contact the instructor immediately for a site. Call her at 785-864-9638 or send an e-mail to Dr. Debra Hedden at least 2 weeks prior to the 1st day of class to arrange for use of a distance site. Please provide your name, address, phone number, e-mail address, intended semester/year for attendance, and requested site location.
Both degree seeking and nondegree seeking graduate students may enroll, but distance students enroll through one section if attending at Edwards, another for "all other" sites. Students will be assessed the fees relevant to the section in which they enroll.
