Heart of America Marching Band Festival a Success
LAWRENCE – Heart of America Marching Festival saw 23 bands take the field in Memorial Stadium on Saturday. With sunny skies above, many families chose to spend the day enthusiastically cheering on bands from throughout Kansas and Missouri.
The day of music making culminated in a rousing routine from the Marching Jayhawks. The Jayhawks presented parts of their pre-game performance including I’m a Jayhawk and Kansas Song, reprised a portion of their well-received Space show with the theme to Star Trek, complete with phasers, and finished with several of the pep tunes for which they are known, such as Africano.
“Heart of America is the final competition of the season for most of the bands here today. We are seeing each school’s creativity and skill at the height of their hard work.” said Matthew Smith, director of the KU Marching Jayhawks. “It’s a joy to watch these students’ pride and spirit take the field.
Awards were given in each of the following categories:
Grand Champion Olathe Northwest Raven Pride
