IIYM Summer Music Academy offers series of free concerts beginning July 8

Thursday, July 5, 2018

LAWRENCE – Talented, teenage pianists attending the International Institute for Young Musicians (IIYM) Summer Music Academy will perform in a series of competitions and recitals from Sunday, July 8 to Thursday, July 19. All performances are free, open to the public and will be held in Swarthout Recital Hall, located in Murphy Hall on the University of Kansas’ Lawrence campus.

The music academy begins with the IIYM Blüthner International Piano Competition. On Sunday, fifteen students, ages 13 to 19 and from throughout the United States, China and Australia, will compete in the semi-final round. On Monday, six pianists from that group will go on to the final round to compete for cash prizes ranging from $1,500 to $10,000.

The winners of the competition will perform at the Gala Winners’ Concert on Saturday, July 14 at 3 p.m. During the IIYM Summer Music Academy, student recitals and honor recitals will be held at 7:30 p.m. daily during the week from Wednesday, July 11 to Thursday, July 19.

Under the direction of Scott McBride Smith, KU Cordelia Brown Murphy Professor of Piano Pedagogy, IIYM is dedicated to creating first-rate opportunities for young musicians from all over the world. Former students have gone on to be named Steinway Young Artists and have won top honors in major international competitions.
