KU Director of Music Education selected for Fulbright Specialist Roster

Wednesday, March 12, 2014

LAWRENCE - Debra Hedden, Director of Music Education and Associate Professor of Music Education and Music Therapy, has been selected for the prestigious Fulbright Specialist Roster.

Hedden will remain a candidate on the Fulbright Specialist Roster for up to five years and is eligible for consideration for two- to six-week grant opportunities through the Fulbright Specialist program. She has designated Europe as the region for Roster inquiries. As the International Education’s Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) receives requests from host institutions overseas seeking Fulbright Specialists, they contact those candidates on the Roster with the most relevant professional experience to ascertain their interest and availability for the grant opportunity. CIES then sends the information of interested candidates to the overseas Fulbright offices for consideration and final selection.

Hedden’s time in Lithuania played an important role in her selection of Europe as the region for her Fulbright Specialist Roster candidacy. She received a Fulbright Scholar grant to Lithuania in 2012, where she taught classes and conducted research during her affiliation with the Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences in Vilnius. During previous trips to Lithuania, Hedden was impressed by the terrific singing culture she observed. Her Fulbright research in 2012 set out to further examine the pedagogical methods in Lithuanian singing schools that were producing such exceptional vocalists. Her research included observations of rehearsals and classes with children and teachers. Hedden also conducted numerous interviews with university and public school teachers, as well as several choirmasters who oversee singing schools. Hedden continues to infuse her research findings into her methods class at the School of Music, and in the work she does as director and conductor of the KU Youth Chorus - a non-auditioned choir of children in grades four through eight.
