KU Instrumental Collegium Musicum and Sunflower Baroque to present concert entitled “Crickets, Quantz, and Crumhorns”
The University of Kansas Instrumental Collegium Musicum and Sunflower Baroque will present a concert entitled “Crickets, Quantz, and Crumhorns” on Tues, Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m. at Haskell Auditorium on the campus of Haskell University, and again on Sun, Mar. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Room 328 of Murphy Hall at the University of Kansas.
The portion of the program presented by the Instrumental Collegium Musicum primarily includes music by Josquin des Prez (c 1450/55-1521), one of the most important composers of the Renaissance. The program will include two wonderful laments by Josquin as well as songs, such as “El grillo” (“The Cricket”), which will be played by the distinctive crumhorn ensemble, along with another song from the sixteenth century imitating crickets. The concert will also be the first performance by a new ensemble, the Sunflower Baroque, the permanent members of which are: Joy Laird, Baroque flute; Paul Laird, Baroque cello; and Elizabeth Egbert Berghout, harpsichord. The ensemble will be joined in its performance by soprano Caitlin Laird and Baroque flutist Dorothy Glick in a short program that includes a trio sonata by Johann Joachim Quantz (1697-1773), a solo sonata by George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), and Spanish pieces for voice and instrument from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Both concerts are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Paul Laird at plaird@ku.edu or 785/865-5946.
