KU Music to end semester with two concerts at the Lied Center
LAWRENCE – As the school year comes to a close, the KU School of Music will give its final two concerts at the Lied Center of Kansas this week.
The KU Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Raffaele Cipriano, will perform at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, May, 1 at the Lied Center. And, the KU Symphonic Band, conducted by Matthew O. Smith, will give a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 3 at the Lied Center.
On Tuesday, the Symphony Orchestra will perform Giuseppe Verdi’s Overture for “Nabucodonsor,” Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring” Suite for 13 Instruments, Claude Debussy’s “Prélude à l´Après-midi d´un faune," featuring flute soloist Maddie Bert, and five movements from Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Capriccio Espagnol.”
Prior to Tuesday’s concert, Cipriano, a doctoral student in conducting, will give a pre-concert talk about his research on live streaming information on phones during performances. The talk will be at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday in the Lied Center Pavilion.
The KU Symphonic Band will kick-off Thursday’s concert with Frank Ticheli’s “Nitro,” which will be guest conducted by graduate student Brooke Humfeld. The concert also will include the world premiere of professor emeritus James Barnes’ “Meditation,” and the consortium premiere of two works by Dana Wilson, “The Banquet,” and “Old Number One,” which will all be conducted by Smith.
Other works include Gustav Holst’s “Moorside March,” which will be guest conducted by graduate student Jong Ho Kim; Kevin Walczyk’s “Elegy for the Wall’s Unnamed;” and Franco Cesarini’s “Bulgarian Dances,” which will be guest conducted by graduate student Brett Keating.
