KU School of Music to host 22nd Annual Heart of America Marching Band Festival

Thursday, October 3, 2013

LAWRENCE - The University of Kansas School of Music, the Kansas Music Educators Association Northeast District and Meyer Music are proud to host the 22nd annual Heart of America Marching Band Festival (HOA). The competition will take place beginning at 1:15 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12 in Memorial Stadium on the KU campus. The event will conclude with a performance by the Marching Jayhawks at 7:45 p.m. followed by the HOA awards ceremony at 8:00 p.m.

This year’s competition features 24 high school bands from across Kansas and Missouri. As in past years, HOA will be judged by a panel of experts with experience in high school and college bands, as well as drum and bugle corps.

“Our festival attracts a wide variety of bands from across the state,” said Matthew Smith, director of KU’s Marching Jayhawks. “It’s a tremendous opportunity for the participating bands to come to KU and perform in Memorial Stadium, as well as receive expert critique from some of the leaders in the field.”

The competition is open to the public. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children, seniors and students. Children under 5 years of age are free. Food concessions and souvenirs will be available for purchase.
