KU School of Music Piano Student Wins International Rosalyn Turek Prize
LAWRENCE – The KU School of Music is pleased to announce Kai Ono, a Piano Performance and Music Composition student from Irvine, CA, was awarded the Rosalyn Tureck (First) Prize at the Fourth Rosalyn Tureck International Bach Competition in New York for his performance of Bach's Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue (category 6).
Ono is a junior at the University, studying with Scott McBride Smith, professor of piano pedagogy. Additionally, he is a member of the KU Jazz Ensemble I and the KU Wind Ensemble, two nationally renowned groups within the KU School of Music.
The Fourth Rosalyn Tureck International Bach Competition was held October 15-18, 2015 in New York City. Rosalyn Tureck was one of the greatest musical artists of the 20th century. Her brilliant, dedicated performances of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach were informed by the depth of her insight. Although she performed Bach on a wide variety of keyboard instruments —clavichord, harpsichord, organ, and even the Moog Synthesizer—her trail-blazing performances of Bach on the piano were an inspiring influence on generations of pianists who followed.
