KU Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony present shared concert at Lied Center on May 6 featuring band classics
LAWRENCE - The University of Kansas Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony will close out the 2013-2014 KU School of Music Lied Center Series with a shared concert at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6 at the Lied Center of Kansas.
Conductor Matthew O. Smith, associate director of KU Bands, will lead the Symphonic Band program, which includes Pageant by Vincent Persichetti, conducted by graduate student conductor Benjamin G. Harper; Irish Tune from County Derry by Percy Aldridge Grainger; and The Gum-Suckers March, also by Grainger, conducted by graduate student conductor Luke D. Johnson.
Paul W. Popiel, director of KU Bands, will lead the opening piece of the Wind Symphony program - Giuseppe Verdi’s Overture to “La forza del destino.” The program will conclude with Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber by Paul Hindemith, conducted by Matthew O. Smith.
