KU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble I to perform with guest artists Feb. 3

Thursday, February 1, 2018

Special guests Boston Brass, saxophonist Tia Fuller, conductor Dai Zhonghui and trombonist Liu Yang will join the KU Wind Ensemble and KU Jazz Ensemble I for a concert at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 3 at the Lied Center of Kansas.

Paul W. Popiel, director of bands, will conduct the KU Wind Ensemble, the school’s premier wind band. Dan Gailey, director of jazz studies, will direct the nationally award-winning KU Jazz Ensemble I. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for children, seniors and students. Tickets can be purchased at the Lied Center Ticket Office, by phone at 785-864-2787 or online at lied.ku.edu.

The guest artists will be among the concert highlights. With more than 100 performances a year, the lively Boston Brass has performed for audiences around the world using a wide range of musical styles and unique arrangements in a fun and friendly atmosphere.  Fuller is a full-time professor at Berklee College of Music. She is a recording artist for Mack Avenue with four CDs and toured with Beyoncé. Zhonghui is a well-renowned trumpet player, conductor and international competition judge. He is associate professor of ASBE of Chinese Musicians’ Association and a member of several other musical organizations. The only trombonist to be named among the “Ten Greatest Wind Music Players” by China Central Television, Yang is an associate professor of trombone and master tutor at the China Central Conservatory of Music.

The guest artists are part of the 15th Annual Prairie Winds Festival from February 2 to 4. High school students from across the state and country come to Lawrence for the three-day festival that provides advanced instruction on wind instruments and percussion. While at KU, high school students participate in master classes, clinics and chamber ensembles. The festival will conclude with a free public concert Sunday, Feb. 4 at 11 a.m. at the Lied Center.

Boston Brass, Fuller, Zhongui and Yang’s visits to KU are made possible through the generous support of Reach Out Kansas, Inc.
