KU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble I to present shared concert at the Lied Center on Feb. 1
LAWRENCE - The University of Kansas Wind Ensemble, conducted by Paul W. Popiel, Director of Bands, and Jazz Ensemble I, directed by Dan Gailey, Director of Jazz Studies, will present a shared concert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1 at the Lied Center of Kansas.
The evening will begin with a special performance by KU Saxophone Quartet I, Vince Gnojek, director, of Tim Davies’ Krunch. The Wind Ensemble program will include …and the mountains rising nowhere by Joseph Schwantner; All Those Endearing Young Charms, a traditional arrangement by Simone Mantia, and featuring guest conductor Sharon Toulouse, Assistant Director of Bands and euphonium soloists Sarah Miller and Albert Miller; Commando March by Samuel Barber, featuring guest conductor Matthew O. Smith, Associate Director of Bands. The Jazz Ensemble I program will include Dum Dum by Frank Foster, Young and Foolish by Albert Hague and Arnold Horwitt, arrangement by Frank Mantooth; Crooked Number by David von Kampen, D.M.A. student in music composition and Jazz Studies graduate teaching assistant; and The Goombay Smash by Steve Owen.
