KU's Midwestern Music Academy ready to kick off 76th year

Wednesday, June 8, 2011

The University of Kansas School of Music is pleased to present another exciting summer of musical enrichment at the 76th annual Midwestern Music Academy, June 12-July 15, 2011.

Since 1936, the Midwestern Music Camp has attracted young musicians to KU to study and perform with outstanding faculty and world renowned guest musicians. Students have traveled from across the country and other nations to attend these camps. To date more than 65,000 young musicians have taken part in this established summer music tradition, and many are now performing in major symphony orchestras, service bands, choirs or teaching at great schools and universities around the world.

The KU Midwestern Music Academy (formerly known as the Midwestern Music Camp) was created in 1935 by former KU band director, Russell L. Wiley. Under Wiley's direction, the camp became the second largest and second oldest music camp in the U.S. The camp was often visited by some of the world's most renowned conductors and artists, such as Andre Previn, Percy Grainger, Sir Vivian Dunn and Carmen Dragon, to name a few.

2011 marks the 76th year of the Midwestern Music Academy. Each division of the academy offers a comprehensive musical experience, planned and supervised by KU faculty. The individual camps offered this year include:

Junior High Music Camp: June 12-17, grades 6-9
