Lift Every Voice: Music of African American Composers
On Friday, February 28, 19 voice students from the KU School of Music will perform more than 20 songs by 17 African American composers including Duke Ellington, Margaret Bonds, and Hall Johnson. The concert marks the 400th anniversary of the first slave ship landing on the shores of North America—acknowledging a painful part of American history—but, also, celebrating the contributions of African American composers to American music. As Black History Month comes to a close, the concert offers the audience a moment to collectively reflect on our history. Admission to the concert is free and the public is welcome. The concert is at 7:30pm, Feb. 28, in Swarthout Recital Hall. More information.
