KU School of Music presents Collegium Musicum spring concert

LAWRENCE-The University of Kansas Collegium Musicum will present “A Bouquet of Early Music” on Sunday, April 29, 2012, in Swarthout Recital Hall at 7:30 PM.

The Vocal Collegium Musicum is directed by Chris Krampe, a DMA candidate in choral conducting, and the Instrumental Collegium Music is directed by Paul Laird, professor of musicology. The ensembles, which specialize in the performance of music from before 1800, typically collaborate on two concerts each year. The Instrumental Collegium performs on instruments like those used during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, and the Vocal Collegium presents thoughtful renditions of choral works with an ear towards what they might have sounded like in past centuries.

“A Bouquet of Early Music” will feature excerpts from the opera Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell (1659-95) and a suite of dances from Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme by Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-87), in addition to varied other pieces, including dances for crumhorns--a raucous, reedy instrument that everyone must hear! The concert is free and open to the public.
