Placement Auditions
Wind, Brass, Percussion
Ensembles
Auditions are required for placement into the following ensembles:Wind Ensemble (Fall Semester Rehearsals: MWF 1:00-2:30; Spring Semester: MWF 3:30-5:20;)
Symphonic Band (Fall Semester Rehearsals: TTh 3:30-5:20; Spring Semester: MWF 2:00-3:15)
Symphony Orchestra (Rehearsals: Fall MTTH 3:30-5:20; Spring M 1:00-2:20 and T/R 3:30-5:20)
In addition, the following ensemble is available to non-majors without audition:
University Band (Fall Semester Rehearsals: T 6:00-7:20; Spring Semester: TTh 4:00-5:20)
Audition Policy
All music majors and scholarship recipients are required to audition and be available to play in the three major ensembles listed above. Consequently, all music majors and scholarship recipients are expected to keep their afternoons completely conflict-free until after the audition results have been posted. Wind players will rotate semesters between the KU Wind Ensemble and the KU Symphony Orchestra.Audition Schedule
All auditions are blind and will be held during the times listed below. To preserve the anonymity of the process, it is imperative that students audition at the assigned times. Students may sign-up in the band office for specific audition times using their KU ID numbers only.
Auditions for Spring semester bands and orchestra will take place as follows:
Wednesday, November 30
5pm-7pm Tuba/Euphs
7:15pm-9:30pm BassoonsThursday, December 1
5pm-7:30pm ClarinetsMonday, December 5
6-8pm TrumpetsSaturday, January 14
10am-12:30pm SaxophonesSunday, January 15
1:00p-3:00 Trombones
3:15p-5:30 Flutes
6:00-7:00pm Oboes
Tuesday, January 17
1:00-4:00pm Percussion
2:00-5:00pm French horn

Auditions are scheduled at 7-minute intervals and consist of the following:5 Prepared Excerpts*

Scoring and Placement
Auditions are scored using the point system detailed below. Placement is determined by the total score of all judges.
