Derivations is the latest Naxos release from the superb KU Wind Ensemble, the premier concert band at the University of Kansas. The album revives wonderfully crafted works from the renowned American composer, Morton Gould, delivering them in immaculate detail with a high level of musicianship. The album opens with Fanfare for Freedom, an inspiring piece written for the World War II war effort that features the robust brass section. The St. Lawrence Suite uses two solo trumpets on opposite sides of the ensemble to depict the cooperation of Canada and the U.S. for the groundbreaking St. Lawrence hydroelectric power project in 1958. Jericho Rhapsody relives the trumpet obliterating the walls of Jericho. The title track, Derivations, is a unique and challenging jazz piece that features the talented Stephanie Zelnick, KU professor of clarinet. Echos of the original West Point fife and drum corps, as well as a specially constructed marching machine, can be heard in Symphony No. 4 "West Point," Gould's highly revered symphony for band.
