Matthew O. Smith
Dr. Matthew O. Smith is interim Associate Director of Bands at the University of Kansas, where he conducts the Symphonic Band, the Marching Jayhawks, and Men's Basketball Band.
His previous position as Assistant Director of Bands in the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, included conducting the Concert Band, teaching undergraduate instrumental conducting, and assisting with the Marching Hundred. While at Iowa State University, he served as the Associate Director of Bands and Director of the Cyclone Marching Band for eight years. Additional responsibilities included teaching in the Department of Music, observing student teachers, and the oversight of all athletic bands. Prior to his arrival at Iowa State, Smith served on the faculties of Baylor University and the University of Michigan.
Raised in Fairfax, Va., Smith received his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. After teaching in the Maryland public schools, he completed a master's degree in music education from the University of Michigan. He completed his Doctor of Musical Arts in Wind Conducting from Michigan State University.
Smith is in frequent demand as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator. During his tenure in Iowa, he conducted the Central Iowa Symphony on several occasions. His professional affiliations include the College Band Directors National Association, Tau Beta Sigma, Kappa Kappa Psi, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
