Kathy K. Price
Kathy Kessler Price, soprano (M.M., Ph.D.),has performed as soloist in such distinguished venues as the Kennedy Center Concert Hall, Carnegie Hall, the National Museum for Women in the Arts, and in a solo concert tour of the Czech Republic. Her operatic roles include "Ma?enka" in Smetana's The Bartered Bride, "Miss Silverpeal" in Mozart's The Impresario, "Lucy" in Menotti's The Telephone, and the title roles in both The Merry Widow and Naughty Marietta. She has appeared as soloist with numerous orchestras on both coasts and in Kansas City where she currently resides. For twelve seasons, Dr. Price performed with the Washington National Opera Chorus, the last six being under the artistic direction of Placido Domingo. In 2010, she appeared with the Amelia Island Chamber Singers as their soloist in A Night at the Opera, and in recital at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Dvo?ak's Rusalka.
Her current research interests include aging female singing voices including menopausal vocal transitions, historical vocal pedagogy with particular focus on female pedagogues, and the role of voice teachers in interdisciplinary voice habilitation and rehabilitation. Refereed presentations to date include the International Physiology and Acoustics of Singing Conference (PAS 4), the Phenomenon of Singing International Conference (Newfoundland), the Voice Foundation Symposium 2010, and National Association of Teachers of Singing Convention 2010, the Music Educators National Conference, and the Southwestern Division Conference of the American Choral Directors Association. Dr. Price's article, "Emma Seiler: A Pioneering Woman in the Art and Science of Teaching Voice," is in press for publication in the Journal of Singing. She is one of two recipients for 2010 of the National Association of Teachers of Singing Vocal Pedagogy Award, and was awarded a Summer Research Fellowship 2010 at The University of Kansas.
Dr. Price has many years' experience as a voice teacher on the college level. At the University of Kansas, she is a lecturer in voice pedagogy, applied voice, and choral conducting, and helps coordinate the School of Music Vocology Lab. Additionally, Dr. Price teaches voice at William Jewell College, is a founding member of the Washington Vocal Consortium, conducts the acclaimed D.C. ensemble Philomela, and maintains private studios in Kansas City and McLean, Virginia.
