Graduate

The division normally has three or four students working as graduate teaching assistants and scholarships/fellowships are available.

MM

Applicants are expected to have educational backgrounds equivalent to the BA or BM in musicology from KU.

Applicants are expected to have a reading knowledge of German, French, Italian, or Spanish. Alanguage deficiency may be satisfied after entrance into the program. Proficiency at the piano is encouraged.

Applicants must submit samples of original scholarly writing. In addition to the required course work, students are encouraged to continue study of performance or composition.

PhD

The Doctor of Philosophy degree in music is offered in musicology and music theory. The applicant is expected to hold a Master of Music degree with emphasis in musicology or music theory from the University of Kansas or an equivalent master’s degree from another accredited institution. In addition to the required transcripts and letters of recommendation, the applicant for admission to the PhD program should submit a summary of professional training and experience, and samples of original scholarly writing.
