Undergraduate Placement Examinations

Music Theory Placement Examination:

This examination, which includes both written and ear-training components, is required of all junior college students and undergraduate transfer students who have not completed a four-semester theory sequence with an accredited NASM school. New freshmen (non-transfer) students who have received training in music theory may take the exam; however, new freshmen students are not required to take the exam. The subject material for each exam may be gleaned from the following sources:

Theory I exam: Jane Clendinning and Elizabeth West Marvin, The Musician's Guide to Theory and Analysis, 2nd edition, chapters 9-17 (diatonic theory, harmonic function in phrases, embellishing chords, non-chord tones, cadences)
Theory II exam: Clendinning and Marvin, 2nd edition, chapters 18-24 (all of the above plus sequences, cadential 6/4, and secondary dominants)
Theory III exam: Clendinning and Marvin, 2nd edition, chapters 25-30 (all of the above plus chromatic harmonies and enharmonic modulation)
(NB: These three exams will all contain part writing in four parts, figured bass realization, and melody harmonization.)
Theory IV exam: Clendinning and Marvin, 2nd edition, chapters 33-40 (modes, non-diatonic scales, set class, twelve-tone procedures, and other post-tonal techniques)
