Lyric Opera of KC Apprenticeship Program

KU’s Division of Voice and Opera is proud to partner with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City for an apprenticeship program created in 2002 by KU faculty member Mark Ferrell. Qualified graduate students are nominated by the voice faculty each spring to audition for openings in this program, which maintains four apprentice artists. The program offers opportunities to be considered for secondary roles as well as participating in the ensemble, coaching and mentoring with visiting artists, and outreach performances. Many graduates of this program have gone on to perform at some of the world's greatest opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Seattle Opera and many others. Lyric Opera of Kansas City Apprenticeship Audition

The Lyric Opera of Kansas City (LOKC) offers apprentice positions which are awarded competitively to qualified students enrolled in the graduate program in voice at KU. The number of available apprenticeships varies from year to year. Singers auditioning for acceptance to a KU graduate program in voice will be considered by the voice faculty for nomination as a finalist for the apprentice program. Finalists will be notified approximately 2 weeks following their KU audition date. For applicants wishing to be considered for an apprenticeship, it is an advantage if they can plan to audition on the designated graduate audition date. Selected finalists should be prepared to offer an audition package of 3-5 suitable operatic arias in a variety of languages and styles as well as a resume and photo. They will audition for the artistic director of the company and will also be interviewed about their professional career goals. The date of the auditions will be stipulated by LOKC and will be determined by the availability of the artistic director and the performance schedule of the company. All decisions about the date of finalist auditions and the awarding of apprenticeships will be made by the opera company.
