Bachelor of Arts in Music

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Music degree is a general music degree intended for students desiring a broad study of music with the flexibility to take elective coursework in other disciplines. This degree program includes private applied study in an instrument or voice, ensemble performance, and coursework in music history and music theory.

The B.A. in Music degree is designed to be an ideal choice for students continuing their study of music at a high level while also completing a second major or a minor in a discipline other than Music.

A total of 120 credit hours (45 at the Jr/Sr 300+ level) is required. A student must earn a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 in all major courses and a minimum average of 2.0 in all course work to graduate.

Students may satisfy required electives outside of music by completing any approved KU baccalaureate degree program or minor. Recent B.A. in Music graduates have achieved acceptance into medical school, law school, and other advanced professional graduate programs. Likewise, B.A. in Music graduates have continued their musical pursuits, being accepted into professional graduate music degree programs.

The general liberal arts curriculum of the B.A. in Music degree prepares graduates for a broad array of career opportunities.

All students applying for School of Music undergraduate degrees (B.A., B.F.A., B.M., B.M.E. & music minor) must audition on an approved instrument or voice.
