Kansas Virtuosi opens 2015-2016 season with Prelude to an Afternoon in Milan on Sept. 13
LAWRENCE – The University of Kansas School of Music proudly presents the first performance in the Kansas Virtuosi Series for the 2015-2016 season. The Kansas Virtuosi Series showcases the world-class talents of the KU School of Music faculty artists. The opening concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13 in Swarthout Recital Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
The concert, titled Prelude to an Afternoon in Milan, features works by Debussy, Verdi, and Mendelssohn. The advanced KU students performing with KU faculty artists during this concert will travel to Milan next month to collaborate with elite students at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory of Music in Milan, Italy’s most historic and important music school.
“We hope this exchange endeavor will create even more interest in the opportunities our institutions can offer each other’s students,” said Robert Walzel, KU School of Music dean. “We are excited about our continued collaboration with Milan, and the experiences it brings to KU music students.”
This performance of Kansas Virtuosi features KU School of Music faculty artists: Sarah Frisof, flute; Robert Walzel, clarinet; Eric Stomberg, bassoon; Véronique Mathieu, violin; Phillip Kramp, viola; Mark Gibbs, violoncello; and Ellen Sommer, piano. Students Katherine Okesson, violin; Henry Setton, violin; Mandy Wang, violin; Kelly Bohling, viola; and Sunnat Ibragimov, violoncello, will join the faculty artists.
The next performance in the 2015-2016 Kansas Virtuosi Series will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15 in Swarthout Recital Hall.
