Apply & Audition

Prospective undergraduate students must complete two separate applications:

2. To apply for admission and audition for KU School of Music please complete the KU School of Music Admission & Audition Packet (pdf)

Admission Deadlines:

  • November 1 - Priority deadline for admissions to any area within the School of Music.
  • February 1 - Deadline for scholarship applications.

All applicants must also meet or exceed academic requirements and successfully complete the audition process.

Academic Requirements:

Kansas Residents/Freshmen

To qualify for admission, new freshmen must submit a completed application with the $30 fee before the November 1 priority deadline and meet one of the following requirements:

  • Achieve an ACT score of 21 or above, or
  • SAT score of 980 or above, or
  • Earn at least a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0-point scale in the Kansas Board of Regents Curriculum »
  • Rank in the top one-third of their high-school class.

Out-of-State Residents (U.S. citizens/Freshmen)

To qualify for admission, new freshmen must submit a completed application with the $30 fee by the November 1 priority deadline and meet one of the following requirements:

  • Achieve an ACT score of 24 or above or an
  • SAT score of 1090 or above with a 2.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0-point scale, or
  • Earn at least a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0-point scale in the Kansas Board of Regents Curriculum »
  • Rank in the top one-third of their high-school class.

Transfer Students:

Students transferring to School of Music from another college or university - including another school at KU - must have a 2.75 GPA.

Readmission:

Former KU students seeking readmission must have left KU in good standing and have a successful audition. If requesting admission after attending another institution, then the student must meet transfer admission requirements (see above).

School of Music Auditions:

  • All music students must audition for acceptance to a music degree program.
  • Audition details are found in the School of Music Admission & Audition Packet (pdf)
  • The Audition Application Form and Audition Time Form must be submitted at least three weeks before your preferred audition date.
  • Audition times are confirmed by email and on the phone.
  • Admittance letters will be sent within two weeks after the audition.
  • Music scholarships are awarded to students majoring in music, except athletic band scholarships.
  • Late audition applications will be considered on a space available basis.

 

 

Graduate study in the School of Music is organized into program areas within 2 units:

  • MUSIC includes programs in Music Composition, Church Music, Conducting, Musicology, Music Theory, and Performance.
  • MEMT (Music Education and Music Therapy) includes programs in music education or music therapy.

School of Music Graduate Application Deadlines (MUSIC and MEMT)

December 1

  • Priority consideration deadline for applicants interested in University Fellowships or Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs) for Fall term the following year.

February 15

  • Final consideration deadline for applicants interested in Graduate Teaching Assistantships (if positions are still available) for Fall term the following year.
  • Final consideration deadline of international applicant admission materials for Summer term entry.

May 1

  • Final consideration for all domestic application materials for Summer and Fall terms
  • Final consideration for all international application materials for Fall term

Graduate MUSIC Degrees (M.M., D.M.A. or Ph.D. in Musicology or Music Theory)

Readmission of Returning Graduate Students

Graduate students must be continuously enrolled in fall and spring semesters to remain active. A graduate student not enrolled in the preceding two semesters (fall/spring) must be readmitted in order to enroll using one of the following processes:

MUSIC and MEMT
  1. Students should contact their graduate program directly to verify status eligibility. If eligible, students must complete the Graduate Permit to Re-Enroll » application. These students are not eligible to request a Leave of Absence. Students who have been dismissed from a program, voluntarily withdrew, or are on an official Leave of Absence (LoA) do not use the Permit to Re-Enroll.
  2. Former KU graduate students not enrolled in the past five years must reapply for admission as a new applicant using the Graduate Studies Online Application ».

Leave of Absence

MUSIC only

MUSIC students wishing to apply for or return from a leave of absence from their graduate degree program must contact Jane Gnojek, jgnojek@ku.edu.

MEMT only

MEMT students must submit an email to Lois Elmer elmer@ku.edu attaching the  MEMT Return From Absence (RFA) Request form (doc). An official Graduate Process to Degree (GPtD) for the intended term(s)/year will be processed.


Graduate Auditions

Applicants for the D.M.A. in Performance are required to audition on their major instrument. Audition requirements are listed by instrument in the Application and Audition Packet (pdf) packet. Applicants for the conducting degrees must provide a video audition as described in the application and audition packet.

IMPORTANT NOTE: All piano and voice majors for the M.M. degree and the D.M.A. degree must submit a pre-screening audition to www.musiccas.com », an online audition upload repository. Once you have completed your application, you will receive instructions for submitting your audition materials to Musiccas ».

2014 Graduate Audition Dates for Piano, Percussion, Opera, Voice, Woodwinds, Strings, and Church Music-Choral Conducting emphasis voice audition:

  • Saturday, February 8, 2014
  • Saturday, February 22, 2014

Organ and Church Music-Organ emphasis applicants must schedule an audition with the division director. Please see the Application and Audition Packet (pdf) for contact information.

VOICE AUDITIONS ONLY: Friday, February 7, 2014
Graduate applicants interested in the Lyric Opera of Kansas City apprenticeship MUST perform a live audition on this date only. No exceptions will be made. Call-back auditions are Saturday, February 8, in Kansas City.

MEMT graduate applicants DO NOT submit audition materials, but must follow the directions listed in the MEMT Graduate Procedure (pdf) document.
