Bassoon Studio

Led by Dr. Midori Samson, the University of Kansas bassoon studio works hard to be the best bassoonists they can be, while prioritizing collective well-being through healing-centered learning practices and community care.

Students from Kansas and from across the United States have enjoyed studying bassoon at KU, connecting their bassoon learning with their diverse skills as performers, educators, practitioners, and scholars. Bassoon students at KU have recently represented the studio as finalists in local, regional, and national competitions, as well as at various graduate programs, conferences, and festivals.

Bassoon studio members work closely with Dr. Samson and their peers to develop excellent musical fundamentals, consistent self-made reeds, competency in diverse repertoires and styles, and individualized bassoon study plans that nurture students’ unique goals and interests. These activities are practiced through one-on-one lessons, weekly reed and studio classes, and performances both on and off campus.
