Who We Are

The Music Research Institute (MRI) was established in 2009 to cultivate and strengthen research and creative activity within the University of Kansas School of Music. Our purpose is to create environments for the pursuit of quality music scholarship in all modes of inquiry.

What We Do

MRI fosters creative activity and research by providing support that blends the best human and musical characteristics of the music research, practitioner, and teacher with the best support available. Among the MRI activities supported by the KU School of Music are graduate education, faculty and student research, post-doctoral study, and workshops.

Aims and Goals of the KU Music Research Institute:

  1. Support and develop new knowledge about music, music education, music therapy, and diversely related areas through scholarly inquiry
  2. Aid school members in the pursuit of support for they areas of creative interests
  3. Provide space and facilities to develop applications of research to music performance, teaching, therapy, and analysis
  4. Support and foster research collaborations among faculty and students
  5. Encourage the development of new technology as well as utilize existing technology and techniques in teaching research
  6. Establish and maintain relations with similar research and teaching centers at other academic institutions
