A century of music: KU School of Music to celebrate 100th Vespers performance
LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas School of Music invites the public to celebrate a major milestone this year as the beloved annual Vespers Concert turns 100.
Vespers has a special celebration planned at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Lied Center of Kansas. In addition to performances and seasonal sounds from choral and instrumental ensembles, the School of Music will also feature a special Alumni Choir filled with performers from decades past.
"The 100th anniversary of our Vespers Concert marks an extraordinary milestone, not only for the KU School of Music but also for the entire Lawrence community. This celebration is a testament to the rich musical tradition and cultural legacy that Vespers has built over the past century,” said Paul Popiel, dean of the School of Music. “It’s a joy to reflect on the countless performers, conductors and audience members who have been part of this cherished event, and we look forward to sharing this special occasion with new and returning guests alike."
Additionally, the KU School of Music will host Jazz Vespers at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 11 at the Lied Center.
About Vespers
The 100th Vespers program will showcase a wide array of musical selections from diverse seasonal traditions. Among the highlights are two world premieres. The KU Symphony Orchestra will present Holiday Vespers Overture, op. 173, by James Barnes, professor emeritus, in a composition specially created for this centennial celebration. Also premiering is "I Only Want to Say (Blessings for the New Year)" by current faculty member Forrest Pierce, written for choir and four-hand piano, and commissioned by the School of Music to mark this historic event.
Additionally, Vespers will feature appearances by the Lawrence Children’s Choir and the KU Trumpet Ensemble. A highlight of the evening will be a performance from the Alumni Choir, with many members traveling for the special occasion.

The 2024 KU Jazz Vespers will feature performances of holiday favorites in a captivating jazz and pop setting, including the celebrated KU Jazz Ensemble I and featured guest artists.
