Biography —
CharCarol Fisher joined the KU faculty in the Fall of 2022 as an Associate Professor of the Practice in Music Therapy. She has a wide range of clinical experiences working with diverse communities and clinical settings in the Kansas City Metropolitan area since 2008. CharCarol developed the expressive therapy program at the Ozanam and Gillis Campuses of Cornerstones of Care in Kansas City, MO, and served as the Program Manager of Expressive Arts, internship supervisor, and music therapist for 9 years. CharCarol has worked primarily with children and adolescents dealing with the challenges of substance use, and traumatic events throughout their lives.
CharCarol’s research interests include culturally sustaining practices in music therapy, the development of musicianship in clinical practice, and integrating music technology in therapy sessions. CharCarol is actively involved with several organizations including serving as the immediate past president of the Midwestern Region of the American Music Therapy Association. She is also the continuing education director of the Black Music Therapy Network, Inc., and a member of the Commission on the Education and Clinical Training of 21st-Century Music Therapists. CharCarol enjoys research and actively presents at national and regional conferences. In addition, she is a faculty member of the American Jazz Museums Jazz Academy where she co-leads the 12th street combo.
