KU School of Music celebrates 20th Annual Collage Concert

LAWRENCE – The University of Kansas School of Music will kick off the 2019-2020 performance season with the 20th Annual Collage Concert, a free celebration of the school’s many musical offerings.

The concert begins a season of more than 20 performances featuring KU music students at the Lied Center of Kansas. The Collage Concert is at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13. The performance is free with no ticket required, and the public is encouraged to attend. For those unable to attend, the Collage Concert will be livestreamed.

Pulling from the school’s many ensembles and soloists, the Collage Concert is the school’s most musically diverse performance of the year and showcases a wide array of talent and disciplines. This year’s concert will feature the KU Wind Ensemble, Brazilian Steel Band, Jazz Ensemble I, Combined Chamber and Concert Choirs, Brass Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra as well as a trio for two oboes and English horn. The concert also includes talented violin, piano and vocal soloists. As in years past, the concert will end with a rousing performance by the KU Marching Jayhawks.

The proceeds from the Collage Concert benefit the Student Opportunity Fund, which helps students interested in traveling throughout the United States and abroad to defray the costs of participating in conferences and competitions.

Throughout the school year, audiences will have multiple opportunities to hear the KU Choirs, Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensembles, Symphonic Band and University Band perform at the Lied Center. Returning for three performances is one of the most popular concerts of the year, the 95th Annual Vespers concert featuring the KU Choirs and Symphony Orchestra. Performances are 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 8. The Vespers on the Road performance will be at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6 at Johnson County Community College.

Also of interest this fall, the KU School of Music celebrates Professor of Tuba/Euphonium Scott Watson’s 40th anniversary with three days of concerts featuring KU tuba/euphonium students and alumni as well as the Free State Brass Band. The celebration begins Oct. 18, and all three concerts will take place in Swarthout Recital Hall. For a complete schedule, go to KU School of Music Calendar.
