Honor Recital Guidelines

Graduate and Undergraduate Honors Recitals Guidelines

Statement of Purpose:

  1. The Honor Recital should recognize outstanding performers.
  2. This recital should be an attractive and varied program, representing as many areas as possible without compromising the first purpose, namely, to recognize outstanding performers.

General Information:

  • There will be one Graduate Honors Recital in the fall semester and one Undergraduate Honors Recital in the spring semester each year. Students should select a work for a solo instrument (or instruments in the case of a double concerto for example) with piano accompaniment. Students may also select unaccompanied solo repertoire.
  • The Honors Recital auditions will be adjudicated by the Honor Recital Committee which is made up of 5 faculty members. No division shall be represented by more than 1 person on the committee.
  • Students must be currently studying their instrument and enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours at the University. Performance majors who are enrolled in less than 6 credits can be nominated on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Honors Committee.
  • Faculty and staff accompanists may be used; however, faculty participation other than keyboard accompaniment will not be allowed.
  • Students will be nominated to audition according to the guidelines established by their division. Each department chair (piano, voice, strings/harp, brass, percussion, & woodwind) will forward its nominations to the Honors Recital Committee Chair at the beginning of each semester. Divisions may choose their candidates by whatever means they determine. Each division may submit up to 5 performers for audition.
  • Once nominated, students will submit the form below and sign up for an audition slot outside of Murphy 448. The form will be posted one week prior to the auditions and will close the day before the auditions.
  • Performers selected for the Honors Recital ARE eligible to audition and be selected in all subsequent auditions.
  • Students selected for the recital may be invited to perform live on Kansas Public Radio.

Audition Information:

STUDENTS MUST BRING TO THE AUDITION:

  1. An accompanist if the solo requires one.
  2. 1 full score of their selection. Photocopies are permitted if the work is in the public domain (IMSLP). Recent compositions MUST be accompanied by an original score.
  • Each audition will be 5 minutes maximum scheduled at 6-minute intervals and the maximum length of the work accepted is 10 minutes. Small sets or multiple movements may be performed provided the total performance time does not exceed 10 minutes. Additionally, the selected set must be of related material (i.e. same composer, song cycle, set of études).
  • There will be no observers in the hall during the audition except for the auditionee’s instructor, who may listen to their student(s).
  • The audition is to be on the selection(s) intended for the recital.
  • Please wait quietly backstage while other students are auditioning. There will be no notes played backstage during auditions.
