KU Prairie Fire Chamber Orchestra releases debut album
LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas School of Music has announced the release of “Prairie Fire!,” the professional recording debut of the KU Prairie Fire Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Creston Herron, director of orchestral activities. Released on The Post Haus label, the album is now available on major streaming platforms.
This makes the album the first commercial grade recording project for the KU Orchestra program.

Centered on contemporary voices in orchestral music, “Prairie Fire!” features works by award-winning composers Libby Larsen, Kirt Mosier, Yukiko Nishimura and Gabe Musella. At the heart of the recording is Mosier’s “Prairie Fire,” a compelling work that the musicians describe as featuring driving rhythms, bold orchestration and expansive gestures that evoke movement, resilience and a powerful sense of place.

The Prairie Fire Chamber Orchestra has developed into a dynamic artistic ensemble, Herron said, one that pairs rigorous musical standards with a culture of ownership, collaboration and expressive freedom.
The recording documents the ensemble at a pivotal moment, capturing performances that balance precision and intensity while highlighting the voices of living composers whose music speaks directly to today’s performers and audiences, Herron said.
Produced to professional standards, the album reflects KU's commitment to preparing student musicians for the demands of contemporary orchestral life while contributing meaningfully to the broader classical ecosystem, Herron said.
